Michel ROCARD - A Few Tentative Solutions
Pouvoirs n°119 - La démocratie sous contrôle médiatique - novembre 2006 - p.101-112
French television, both public and private, is experiencing a dangerous
drift as the intense need to attract advertising leads to vulgar soliciting
and a growing contempt for ethics. In order to remedy this situation it
would be necessary first to convince public opinion that such a
remedy is needed. Then under public opinion pressure media professionals
would be forced to redefine their ethical commitments. The
national education system should endeavour to teach how critically to
read an image as it does for written texts. Finally it is possible and
necessary to suppress advertising on public television.
