Laurence MONTEL - A Historical Survey of Organized Crime and Politics in France
Pouvoirs n°132 - Le crime organisé - janvier 2010 - p.7-27
From the modern times, the nineteenth century criminal underworlds
have inherited an essentially confrontational relationship with the
world of politics. However, between 1900 and 1960, a relationship of
complicity emerged both at the local and the national level. This permeation
between the criminal and political spheres is characteristics
of French organized crime also known as the “Milieu”. This evolution
is presented here through a case study of Marseilles, although other
cases are also analyzed.
