Claude Klein - Church and State in Israel
Pouvoirs n°72 - Israël - janvier 1995 - p.7-16
It is quite difficult to understand the intricate relationship between church
and state in Israel. It is based on a certain number of rules inspired by religion
(individual status, respect of the Sabbath, the law of return). While, in
principle, a political statu quo has been the rule since the establishment of
the State in 1948, it has not always been able to prevent several major crises.
When analyzing the evolution of the balance between the forces, one
should avoid focusing exclusively on electoral results, and take into
account the fact that sectors of the lay population identify strongly with
certain religious values.
