Simon GRIVET - From Berkeley to Watts, Californie between Protest and Conservative Reaction
Pouvoirs n°133 - La Californie - avril 2010 - p.43-55
California in the 1960s underwent a season of discontent which shattered
its image of a rich and prosperous State. During the fall of
1964, Berkeley students organized themselves to obtain full freedom
of speech on campus. In August 1965, the Afro-American ghetto of
Watts in Los Angeles exploded in a very violent riot. Those disorders
allowed Ronald Reagan to build a new majority and become governor
of California. This scenario was a harbinger of future events on the
national level.
