Pierre AVRIL, Jean GICQUEL - The 4th Republic between two Republics
Pouvoirs n°76 - La IVe République - janvier 1996 - p.27-43
The sequence of events that goes from 1875 to 1946 and 1958 is part of
a dialectical continuity according to which the 4th Republic had no
choice but to continue reluctantly the 3rd Republic because it neither
wished nor was able to do away with the political principle of parliamentary
sovereignty (thesis). But thanks to the reflection it inspired, it
announced the events of 1958, namely the perfection of a rationalized
form of parliamentarism (antithesis). Finally and paradoxically, the
5th Republic proved to be a « successful 3rd Republic » (synthesis),
albeit by following a path not foreseen by its founders in 1958.
