Catherine CLÉMENTIN-OJHA - The Hindu Majority and Minorities: A Challenge for Hinduism
Pouvoirs n°90 - L’Inde - septembre 1999 - p.43-53
The multireligious character of India resulting from a long history has
created various identity groups at the legal level: the “Hindu majority”
and seven “minorities”. The latter benefit from a number of privileges
guaranteed by the Constitution. Despite its secular character, this system
gives way to religious interpretations by the Hindus which, in
turn, fuels tensions between the various communities.
