David MARTINON - The Hollywood Party
Pouvoirs n°133 - La Californie - avril 2010 - p.85-101
As its goal was to create a dream world, as the personal project of its
creators was to take power within American society, the Hollywood
Party has created the ideology and forged the values of the United
States. In this regard, the Western movie is the real dna of the country.
This ideology of American patriotism had a direct and permanent
influence on politics before the us entry into the Second World War
and during the Vietnam War. But it also had to obey the commands
of the political authorities at the time of McCarthy’s witch hunt. Yet,
the Hollywood Party, benefitting from an array of diverse talents,
constantly challenges the American political project. The Hollywood
Party is more than an interest group as it claims to promote a universal
message. It is a coalition of unions and informal groups. It behaves like
a party – and is close to the Democratic Party – because it selects candidates
the American way, i.e. with money. And its candidates, which
are of course atypical, even get elected.
