Marc BRÉMOND - The Physicians’ Professional Associations

Pouvoirs n°89 - Le pouvoir médical - avril 1999 - p.119-134

For more than a century, the physicians’ professional associations have proven incapable of playing a role in the regulation of the profession because they have failed to deal with the tensions present in the profession. They have limited themselves to upholding a traditional vision of an individual-centered, non-administered health care and, therefore, envisage health care regulation only through fees. Today the necessary control of social contributions represents an unavoidable constraint calling for a new form of health care. In order to progress in that direction public, authorities will have to abandon the notion of “medical control” which represents a clear ideological trap set up by professional associations. Résumé
