Pierre BRÉCHON - The Role of Political Parties in the Expression of the Vote
Pouvoirs n°120 - Voter - janvier 2007 - p.109-121
Political parties are essential organizations for the expression of the
vote in a democratic society. They play an irreplaceable role in the
selection of political elites through the screening of potential candidates.
Their electoral role and their function as expression of collective will is guaranteed by the law. Thus, the existence of parties is protected
in the name of freedom of association and expression in a democratic
society. Yet, political parties are criticized by the public, and
these criticisms are traditional, more or less present in all countries,
and to a large extent of a structural nature.
