Pierre-Olivier SUR - The Tenors
Pouvoirs n°140 - janvier 2012 - p.59-70
Tenors are to be found in music, in politics, at the bar. When applied
to lawyers why not take the term in its literal sense, which refers to the
tessitura of the voice, and present the tenors in a gallery of portrait or
curiosities? However, the best lawyers are not distinguished only by
the quality of their oral pleading. We should also consider their consulting
activities which account for about two-thirds of the work of
the lawyer profession. Thus, there are “tenors” of fiscal law, “tenors”
of mergers and acquisitions, “tenors” of debt restructuring, etc. The
lawyer’s activities are too varied. Shall we eventually have to establish
a ranking system similar to the one used for restaurants and hotels,
a kind of Michelin guide of lawyers and their practices, in order to
facilitate access to the law in all its domains? Shall we accept the creation
of private rating agencies? Or should this mission be entrusted
to the Orders?
