Against Participatory Democracy

Participatory democracy is in vogue as a method likely to overcome the real crisis of confidence affecting representative systems. But what does such a requirement mean? Whose participation—which people or which citizens? Participation to what? To public deliberation, decision-making, the control of elected officials? The truth is the term “participatory” is not clearly defined. Its outlines are vague and, more seriously, its usage could turn out to be toxic as it could unintentionally lead to a further dispossession of the people rather than a renewed control over its destiny. It would in any case be illusory to see it as the panacea to revive democratic confidence.
