Pouvoirs n°103 - L’Italie - novembre 2002 - p.129-142
The article focuses on the relationships between Italy and the European
Union since the general election of 2001, which have brought to power
the center-right coalition headed by Silvio Berlusconi. A number of disagreements
between Italy and its European partners regarding the common
judicial and defense policies – accentuated by a number of disagreements
within the Italian government itself – have led to a different
position from that of the previous center-left governments which had
placed Italy among the first group of countries adopting the single currency.
However, this new position is not accompanied by a change in
public opinion which remains strongly pro-European, and it does not
seem to indicate a radical change in the Italian attitude, which can count
on the great international credibility of the Head of State and his role
as guarantor of Italy’s European policy.
