The Animal Rights Movement : From the "Old Ladies of Animal Protection" to the Emergence of a Disturbing Movement

Since the creation of the first institution in France in the nineteenth
century (the Society for the Protection of Animals), the movement
for the protection of animals has considerably changed. Given the
growing control over the animal world and the extension of domains
in which animals are used in ways that almost always lead to suffering
and death (factory farming, fishing, experimentation), the movement
has become more specialised and structured and its concerns have
come to include wild animals (hunting). Its demands have also become
more radicalised under the influence of a theoretical reflection about
the right of life and death over animals. Today two currents coexist
within the movement : a reformist one which tries to limit the suffering of animals as they are being used by men, and an abolitionist
one, which questions the very principle of the use of animals by men.
