The Police Forces in France

The French domestic security system is highly diversified.
Contrary to what most people believe the national police and the
national gendarmerie are not the only existing forces. There are many
other structures, either public or private, which contribute to such an
essential mission for democracy. The development of this complex edifice
is quite recent, although it is based on very old institutions.
However, given the anarchical development of this edifice, it has
become necessary to harmonize its various structures and to rationalize
the doctrines which monitor their action in order to achieve the
degree of security the French people are demanding. The resources
exist, men (and women) are available, yet the real security needs are
underestimated, because it is not part of our culture to collect and measure
them in order to deal with them.
