When and How to Choose a Leader: The British Example

In the United Kingdom, political parties control the choice of their leader. Such an appointment usually occurs after a defeat in the general election when the party decides to choose a new leader better able to guarantee its unity, to become the head of the shadow cabinet and to win the next general election in order to be head of government. The selection process within the two major parties has been democratized, yet it remains limited to the party members, indicating that the United Kingdom is not only a parliamentary regime, but also a party system.
